The Shadow of Death
Ryruni grew up in the town of Winterhaven working as a farmhand for Douven Staul. He revered Douven as a father figure and idol. He especially idolized his kind nature. Over the years as Douven took in more and more unruly youth (whom Ryruni saw as his adopted brothers and sisters) to give them direction, Ryruni grew to realize that the thing he wanted to learn most from Douven was how to be a thoughtful and kind individual. But in the end Ryruni’s goal was to learn to do everything from Douven. He wanted to cast magic, excel in sword play, be a skilled martial artist, and anything else that came to his fancy. But whenever Ryruni tried to excel in something he would find that one of his siblings was already vastly superior. He was not a skilled woodsman like Ace, he was not strong like Anastajia, and he was not attuned to the arcane like Elric. One day when he had almost given up hope at ever excelling at something, he found a beautiful bird that was colored like the rainbow, lying on the ground and creeping closer to death. He swept the bird up and brought it to his home; Ryruni spent weeks nursing it back to health and one day when he woke up it had flown away, leaving only one of it’s multi-colored feathers behind. Satisfied at his good work he went about the day in a jolly blur, only stopping to sleep that night. To keep the feather safe he placed it under his pillow and when he awoke the feather had been replaced by an even more beautiful sword with an ornate hilt detailing a horse with stars for eyes. When he rushed to show Douven the sword he was told to rush to the temple of the Red Knight in a nearby town and recount his tale to them. He had finally found his true calling was to become a cleric. He spent the next portion of his life studying at the temple and honing his skills as a healer, until he received a message from Douven’s wife (his adoptive mother) to return to the farm at once. Douven, the most important person in Ryruni’s life, had gone missing.
