The Shadow of Death
From the innocent age of six and the years before, Estella has no recollection of her previous life. Her adoptive parents, Gisabelle and Baefyre Whittenvale, recall the incident of their first encounter with Estella quite often. The story goes a little something like this:
Gisabelle and Baefyre were visiting the town of Winterhaven for a small vacation when they noticed a little disheveled girl wandering the streets in a daze. Being the compassionate soul that she is, Gisabelle approached the young girl and attempted to talk to her.
“Hello, young one,” she began, with a calm voice. “Where are your parents?”
Estella didn’t answer – well, not in the usual way. She made direct eye contact with Gisabelle and began to purr and make small hissing noises.
Gisabelle quickly realized that this child was not what she seemed to be.
Needless to say, the Whittenvale’s spent the whole day escorting Estella around Winterhaven in a futile attempt to find her parents. As the sun began to set, it became clear that wherever Estella’s parents were (be it a different country or a different plane of existence) they were not going to be found. So by unanimous vote between the couple, Estella was adopted into the Whittenvale family.
Many years later, around Estella’s 10th birthday, she began to show some aptitude with a rapier. Now capable of human dialect and behaviour, Estella’s parents encouraged the idea of her going to learn with Douven Staul, a highly regarded teacher of both physical and arcane matters. For the next 12 years of her life, Estella studied with Douven Staul to learn the art of swordsmanship.
Now 26 years old and a well known noble around the area, Estella receives word of her beloved mentor’s possible disappearance. Without a second thought, she packs up and begins her search to find him. She desperately holds onto the idea that she will not be too late.
